Responsibilities

Schedule:
Normal Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 hours between 7:00am and 5:00pm, including a one hour lunch
No Weekends, No Holidays, No Call!
 
Job Specific Details and Tasks:
  • Shall provide full spectrum Internal Medicine care encompassing outpatient clinical and procedural services. This will be provided in a cost-effective manner that focuses on patient-centered evidence-based outcomes. The General Physician - Internal Medicine will collaborate with staff and other clinical departments within and outside the MTF to facilitate excellent patient care and will be expected to participate fully as a member of the 99 MDG medical staff. The General Physician - Internal Medicine will have sufficient experience to be able to adequately diagnose and treat diseases/injuries to include but not limited to; Cardiovascular diseases (congestive heart failure, hypertension, arrhythmias, acute myocardial infarction), respiratory diseases (asthma, bronchitis, pulmonary thromboembolism, pulmonary insufficiency & adult respiratory distress syndrome), gastrointestinal diseases (peptic ulcer, gastritis, pancreatitis, cirrhosis & alcoholic liver), endocrinology (disease of the thyroid & diabetes mellitus), rheumatology (sarcoidosis, degenerative joint disease), renal disease (acute renal failure, urinary tract infection), neurology (epilepsy & cerebrovascular disease) and infectious diseases (infectious diarrheas, bacterial infections, hospital-acquired infections, tuberculosis, infections of the compromised host & other microbacterial infections). The General Physician - Internal Medicine’s productivity, in terms of patients seen per clinic day is expected to be comparable to that of the other civilian and military General Physician - Internal Medicine assigned to the same facility and authorized the same scope of practice. Productivity will meet current Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) standards for Nellis Air Force Base. The MGMA standard is updated annually on the fiscal year. It is the Contractor’s responsibility to contact Medical Logistics for an updated copy.
  • Shall see new patient consults and established follow-up clinic visits. The HCW is expected to participate in telehealth and virtual encounters as well as respond to telephone consults and secure messages IAW pertinent AFIs and local policies. The HCW will also consult with other specialty practitioners for consultative opinions and continuation of care.
  • Shall include routine general internal medicine care which includes care for acute and chronic patient conditions.
  • Shall practice within the guidelines set by the credentialing office of the MTF and or Medical Director.
  • Shall adhere to the policies and standards of the Defense Health Agency and Air Force Medical Service in meeting or exceeding established Air Force standards for access, Preventive Health Assessment Individual Medical Record (PIMR) and HEDIS measures.
  • Shall coordinate patient care with community health agencies and social programs. Will facilitate continuity of care for patients. Has knowledge of a wide variety of resource agencies available in the military treatment system to ensure proper and expedient referral of the patient and/or family member.
  • Shall possess sufficient knowledge of current TRICARE standards, population-based health care, disease management, medically oriented computer systems, and trends in prevention.
  • Familiarization with Department of Defense (DoD), Federal, State, non-profit healthcare systems and organizations, to include DoD Tri-Service Military Healthcare Systems, TRICARE purchased care system, Medicare, Medicaid and the Veterans Administration (VA) is highly desired.
  • Shall ensure implementation of policies, standards, and programs that support the clinical practice within ethical and legal boundaries.
  • Shall possess knowledge and experience in Patient Advocacy, Patient Privacy, and Customer Relations.
  • Shall function as a patient advocate and mandatory reporter in the medical center.
  • Shall possess basic knowledge of emergency procedures in order to react promptly and appropriately to provide effective care during emergency situations, respiratory or cardiac arrest.
  • Shall provide immediate evaluation and management of emergency problems as they occur.
  • May provide other health care services not specifically listed for which training/credentials are held and privileges have been awarded by the MTF Commander.
  • Shall consult with medical personnel, legal authorities, and military commanders as required.
  • Shall be guided by the MTF formulary for prescriptions. Drugs not appearing on the formulary must be pre-approved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Shall possess basic knowledge of established clinic standards of care and Joint Commission requirements for clinical and documentation protocols, safety, infection control, performance improvement, etc., to ensure compliance with policies and provide consistent training and guidance for clinic staff.
  • Shall ensure patient and staff safety through safety awareness, proper infection control and promotion of clean, orderly clinic environment. Recognizes, reports, and corrects potential safety hazards.
  • Documentation. Shall prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established MTF standards, to include, but not limited to: timeliness, accuracy, content, and signature.
  • Shall only use MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations for documentation in the patient health records and follow the MTF’s Do Not Use Abbreviation List.
  • Shall complete medical records documentation within 72 business hours of the encounter with the patient.
  • Coding. Shall use the proper coding of procedures and treatment and shall maintain coding accuracy (CPT/E&M/procedure) at the same standard, 90% or higher, as military and civil service health care providers engaged in comparable work.
  • Shall be responsible for creating, maintaining and disposing of only those Government records which are specified by the 99 MDG.
  • Shall only release medical information obtained during the course of this contract to other MTF staff involved in the care and treatment of that individual patient.
  • Shall possess basic knowledge of and ability to demonstrate leadership skills in order to provide guidance, counseling, training and professional evaluation.
  • Shall develop and direct long-term management strategies. Shall provide clinical and administrative leadership and expertise, managing patient care and coordinating additional subspecialty referrals, answering patient telephone consults (with the assistance of clinic staff), and refilling prescriptions.
  • May be asked to participate in committees, programs or clinical services directly related to area of clinical responsibility or privileges. May temporarily be assigned clinic medical director duties.
  • Shall provide for ongoing education programs to promote, protect and maintain optimum levels of wellness. Shall provide health counseling to patients and their families and develop a plan for health maintenance based on individual needs.
  • Shall provide instruction, coaching, mentoring, and training for medical residents, physician assistant students, medical students and/or students of other health care disciplines in the form of clinical rotations, didactics and outpatient discussions as appropriate.
  • Shall participate in educational activities to include supervision of internal medicine residents and physician assistant students in clinic duties, teaching residents on internal medicine services.
  • Shall direct supporting Government employees assigned to them during the performance of clinical duties. Guides the performance of assigned personnel. Uses team approach toward staff and patient management.
  • Shall perform administrative duties that may include maintaining statistical records of his or her clinical workload, participating in medical educations programs, and participating in quality improvement functions and other duties as prescribed by the Flight Commander or Medical Director.
  • Shall attend and participate in meetings, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to the following: quality improvement meetings, professional staff meetings, commander's staff meetings, flight meetings, and other meetings required by applicable regulations, MTF guidance, or as directed by the Flight Commander or Medical Director.
  • Shall possess basic knowledge of operating a wide variety of medical equipment/non-medical equipment to ensure patient and staff safety, proper equipment maintenance and accessibility.
  • Shall treat patient information, no matter how developed, as privileged information. Patient information shall not be disclosed or revealed in any way for any use outside the MTF without adherence to HIPAA and local policies and regulations.
  • Shall respect and maintain the basic rights of patients, demonstrating concern for personal dignity and human relationships. Providers receiving complaints validated by the FRED, COR, Flight Commander or Chief of the Medical Staff shall be subject to counseling and, depending on the nature and severity of the complaint, separation from performing services under this contract.
  • Shall maintain open and professional communication with members of the MTF staff, MTF customers, and other HCWs. COR will report valid complaints in writing to the CO for action. Valid complaints will be considered a performance failure. The contractor shall resolve all substantiated complaints immediately upon notification of the complaint, and no later than the suspense date provided by the CO, or designated representative. Substantiated patient/staff complaints-max 2 per contract/option period.
  • Shall seek and maintain interpersonal relationships with clients/families and coworkers which contribute to mission accomplishment.
  • Shall possess basic knowledge of various training methods and interpersonal skills in order to develop a rapport with the patients, family members, and co-workers during which instructional and education information is performed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Education: Graduate of an approved medical school; completion of an Internal Medicine residency.

* Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience, may include internship, residency, and fellowship training.

* Licensure: Possess an active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in any state.

* Board Certification: Possess Board Certification from ABIM or AOBIM. 

* Life Support Certification: Possess current AHA or ARC BLS and ACLS certifications.

* Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
