Responsibilities

Work Schedule:
Monday- Friday, 8.5 hours - between 7am to 5pm, with a 30 minute lunch. Services may be required on the day of observance of Federal holidays. 

No Weekends, No Call!

 


Job Specific Details and Tasks: The duties for the HCW include but are not limited to the following: 

 

  • Plan and organize work of considerable difficulty and responsibility under minimal supervision.
  • Participate in research and performance improvement studies.
  • Conduct nutrition assessment/evaluation which includes nutrient intake, activity level, appetite, intake of vitamins, minerals, nutritional supplements, and other complimentary alternative medicine usage, weight history, taste changes, feeding problems, food intolerance, food-drug interactions, unhealthy diet behaviors, socioeconomic and ethnic background, documented medical history, current diagnoses and medical treatment modalities, current drug therapy, and clinical signs and symptoms of nutritional deficiencies. 
  • Apply the basic principles of enteral and parenteral nutrition support.
  • Apply principles and practices of clinical dietetics and medical nutrition therapy in order to plan, develop, and independently coordinate medical nutrition therapy intervention, interdisciplinary care plans, and nutrition education activities.
  • Conduct studies, analysis, and document findings to evaluate staff, food, nutrition supplements/feeding or meal alternatives and therapies, supplies, equipment, and service in order to improve the efficiency of the operation.
  • Apply current food service systems management, principles, and practices within a healthcare environment.

Additional duties: 

  • Coordinate with the MTF Fitness Leaders to register and track patient participation and to promote optimal program participation for all active-duty members.
  • Develop, coordinate and teach the “Health Weight” weight management program for beneficiaries. Coordinate and teach additional nutrition classes including prenatal, General Dietary Management (GDM), Diabetes Mellitus (DM), Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP), hypertension and cholesterol management and other nutrition programs, as needed for all beneficiaries.
  • Teach dietary principles to all age groups from pediatric through geriatric, for any disease entity which may include but is not limited to weight reduction, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, gastrointestinal, coronary artery disease or hyperlipoproteinemia, prenatal and bariatric.
  • Provide health promotion classes and programs for MTF departments, staff, active-duty members, and their beneficiaries.
  • Medical Nutrition Therapy. Provide individualized medical nutrition therapy to include the inpatient wards and/or outpatient clinics. This includes complete nutrition assessment of each patient adhering to Joint Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of American Dietetic Association (ADA) guidelines.
  • Closely monitor key laboratory values in order to revise diet therapy as necessary. Request appropriate laboratory tests for patients to more accurately assess nutrient needs when current laboratory values are unavailable.
  • Review diets prescribed by physicians, making necessary nutrient calculations, personalizing diet for patient’s lifestyle and nutritional needs and making recommendations to physicians for change in diet prescription as appropriate.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

* Education:  Bachelor's degree. Graduate from a college or university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) or completion of a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) accredited by the ACEND or completion of a post- Baccalaureate degree Dietetic Internship Program of supervised practice (for a minimum of 1200 hours) accredited by ACEND.

* Experience: One year of specialized experience in diet therapy after graduation.

* Licensure: Possess a current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Dietitian in one of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands.

* Life Support Certification: Current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification. 

* Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
