Responsibilities

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 9 hours between 7:00am and 4:30pm, including a one hour lunch

 

Core Duties: The duties include, but are not limited to the following;
• Coordinate patient care in collaboration with a wide array of healthcare professionals. Facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality and cost effectiveness.
• Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the MTF.
• Perform physical exam and health histories.
• Provide health promotions, counseling, and education.
• Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized interventions.
• Direct and supervise care provide by other healthcare professionals.
• Accountable for making patient care assignments based on the scope of practice and skill level of assigned personnel.
• Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and quickly react in emergency situations.
• Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
• Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as appropriate.
• Perform nursing services identified in the TO.
• Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.

Additional Duties:

• Reports to the Chief of Medical Staff (SGH), or designee, in performance of Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPC) duties.
• In coordination with the Government Patient Safety Manager, has oversight of IPC activities.
• In coordination with the Government Patient Safety Manager, performs annual self-inspection of the IPC program using the Management Internal Control Toolset (MICT), Self-Assessment Communicators, The Joint Commission’s Comprehensive Accreditation Manual, and other relevant guidance.
• Conducts a MTF infection control risk assessment (ICRA) annually and when significant change to risk occurs.
• Assists in the IPC Annual Plan and Annual Summary. Uses the ICRA findings to draft the plan and updates as needed.
• Conducts surveillance as indicated in the Annual Plan or as required by the Air Force Medical Service and the DHA.
• Collects, manages, and analyzes surveillance data using standardized methodology and definitions per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) guidelines and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
• Utilizes various information systems for surveillance activities. This includes MHS Genesis, NHSN, Surgical Scheduling System, electronic healthcare records, and Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support (DMLSS).
• Monitors infectious diseases and epidemiological significant organisms occurring in the community via laboratory and public health reports.
• Identifies and evaluates clusters of infections and potential outbreaks.
• Institutes outbreak investigations and control measures as needed.
• Ensure the MTF’s infection prevention and control program operating instruction is up to date (every two years).
• Promotes infection prevention and control related topics and National Patient Safety Goals to ensure patient safety outcomes.
• Assists with IPC newcomer’s orientation and ensures annual training includes all requirements listed in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 29, Standard 1910.1030, Bloodborne Pathogens, and the Standard 1910.134, Respiratory Protection.
• Maintains records IAW established clinic procedures, regulatory and accrediting agencies and local policy.
• In coordination with the Government Patient Safety Manager, develops the IPCF meeting agenda and records minutes.
• Assists in the evaluation of products, devices, and equipment relating to IPC.
• Reviews all requests for new products and medical supplies in the DMLSS system, excluding pharmaceutical items and equipment requests, any final determinations will be made by the Government Patient Safety Manager.
• Collaborates with other departments to implement strategies to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms and other epidemiologically important organisms, and to promote antimicrobial stewardship.
• Monitors and evaluates the efficacy of IPC strategies.

• In coordination with the Government Patient Safety Manager, provides recommendations regarding the IPC Program on potential renovation, construction, repair projects, facility modifications, and relocations.
• Assists in the development of a focused construction/renovation Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) during the construction planning phase regarding the IPC Program.
• Reviews and updates infection prevention and control related Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as needed.
• Assist Aerospace Medicine in developing the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan and Respiratory Protection/Tuberculosis Prevention Exposure Control Plan.
• Assist Public Health to provide timely information to determine occupational risk categories for personnel. Ensures the IPC Annual Plan reflects any updates on occupational risk categories, Bloodborne Pathogens, and medical employee health to ensure patient safety outcomes.
• Collaborates with Aerospace Medicine and Public Health for the management of an influx of infectious patients.
• Collaborates with the Patient Safety Manager on infection prevention and control related events. Assists with event analysis and development or corrective actions.
• Assist Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), Air National Guard (ANG), and Aeromedical Evacuation Units’ Integer Programming (IPs) in in the development of Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs), or Host-Tenant Agreements as applicable to ensure patient safety outcomes.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
* Degree: Associates degree in nursing

* Education:Graduate from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
* Experience: Three years of clinical experience in Infection Prevention and Control Program. Attend the Epidemiology, Prevention and Infection Control (EPIC) course no later than six months of assignment to the position
* Licensure: Active, unrestricted RN license from any state.

* Life Support Certification: Possess current ARC or AHA BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
* Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
