Responsibilities

Work Schedule:
Sunday - Saturday, typical hours between 6:00am and 6:30pm but may vary in support of Urgent Care clinic. No more than 40 hours per week.
 
Specific Tasks:
  • Works under the clinical supervision of a lead Medical Technologist who outlines assignment parameters, deadlines and priorities. The incumbent will serve as Medical Laboratory Technician in the general laboratory and point of care testing labs; works independently in performing a full range of medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease in the areas of clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, molecular microbiology, point of care testing, phlebotomy, and specimen processing, to include specimen mail out for reference testing.
  • Laboratory manuals, operator's manuals, instructions and guidelines do not completely cover all aspects of the tests, examinations, interpretations and procedures required.
    The incumbent is expected to work independently and to recognize and resolve problems. Performs, evaluates, and monitors the performance of routine and specialized test procedures using manual or automated methods in accordance with established protocols. Prepares standards, controls, solutions, and reagents required for testing.
    Determines suitability of specimens for analysis and can actively engage with clinical staff outside the laboratory to request new specimen if determined that given specimens are unsuitable for testing. Prepares specimens for analysis, ensuring that the physiological properties of the sample are maintained.
  • Supports a comprehensive Quality Control program on all procedures and reagents, ensuring technical and scientific accuracy of tests and procedures performed throughout the laboratory. Performs initial review of quality control data so as to recognize departures from expected results and identifies shifts, trends, and/or bias in testing procedures. Performs initial corrective actions to resolve problems. Fully documents all problems and corrective actions and forwards to the appropriate senior Medical Technologist.
  • Performs review of patient results. Identifies unusual and/or discrepant values and initiates appropriate follow-up procedures to correct problems. Correlates data with other laboratory findings and/or patient history to verify results. Ensures timely reporting of patient results to requesting clinicians. Promptly reports and appropriately documents critical and abnormal results to clinicians.
  • Operates and performs preventive maintenance and minor troubleshooting on clinical laboratory instrumentation. Performs inventory and initiates ordering of supplies as necessary. Verifies correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Identifies the cause of common and more complex problems and makes repairs, as required. Acts as the key operator for assigned instrumentation.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
* Education: The medical laboratory technicians shall have a certificate or higher level of training as a graduate from a civilian or military medical laboratory technician program. The training/education program shall be accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or educational program acceptable to the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
* Experience: Minimum 24 months full-time experience within the last 36 months
* Licensure: Must have an active, unrestricted Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Association of Biochemists (AAB) or American Medical Technologist (AMT).
* Life Support Certification: Possess a current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
* Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
