Responsibilities

Work Schedule:

M-F between the hours of 6am to 7pm, with 1 hour lunch.

On call is required

Call back/Overage - occasional

 

Job Specific Details and Tasks: The duties include, but are not limited to the following:

• Treat all staff members and patients with dignity, respect, and in a professional manner at all times. Internal and external customer complaints are monitored.
• In accordance with the procedural physician’s preference and established standards, ensures presence of all instruments and equipment, and supplies necessary for gastroenterological procedures; inspects all instruments to ensure all required items are available. Responsible for care and handling of all gastroenterological equipment used.
• Set up clean field as necessary for specific gastroenterological procedures (This includes, but not limited to upper endoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, ERCP, esophageal pH testing, pill camera endoscopy, paracentesis, manometry, liver biopsy, and PEG placement). Equipment set up, support, and take down for emergent procedures is performed wherever required within the MTF, including but not limited to the OR, ER, and ICU.
• Maintains neat, orderly, and safe work area. Practices economy in the use of all supplies. Checks for expiration dates.
• Be knowledgeable about professional and practice issues related to the field of gastroenterology.
• Provides and maintains a safe environment for the patient and staff by complying with facility requirements and safety standards.
• Assists the physician and RN during diagnostic, therapeutic and medical emergencies.
• Cleans gastroenterological area and helps to clean procedure and clinic rooms following gastroenterology procedures. Properly disposes of contaminated supplies and equipment. Disposes of biohazardous waste per infection control guidelines.
• Performs high level disinfection (HLD) of endoscopes in the instrument processing area such as washing, assembling, and sterilizing instruments and ensuring they are functional.
Stores instruments and supplies, monitors dated packs, and supplies to ensure sterility.
• Can properly utilize the endoscopic re-processor. Follows manufacturer’s IFUs (instructions for use) and works in compliance with TJC requirements.
• Knows how to test the high-level disinfectant for efficacy and can document the test results.

• Can transport scope following procedure from procedure room to disinfection area in accordance with TJC requirements.
• Responsible for the care, identification, and labeling of specimens and the delivery of specimens to pathology.
• Screens and checks-in patients; escorts and transports patients to treatment areas safely using wheelchairs, gurneys, and other means.
• Obtains, monitors, and records physiological measurements in patients EMR as required.
• Will train HCW how to start and discontinuing intravenous (IV’s) and must be able to chart in patient EMR.
• Is proficient at lab draws and can transport to lab per hospital protocols.
• Utilizes safety measures as required, including masks, gloves, etc.
• Prepares procedure rooms and preoperative bays, excluding medications.
• Speaks clearly and can communicate with physicians during procedures.
• Works cooperatively with co-workers, students and with all patient contact. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries.
• Keeps accurate inventory of supplies and communicates with supply custodian when supplies are needed to ensure ability to perform patient care.
• Knows how to operate all equipment in clinic, Pre-operative, intraoperative, and postoperative area.
• Assists with patient recovery following procedures, including assistance in identifying and managing post-procedural complications.
• Attends and performs all required CBTs, department trainings and maintains knowledge of safety procedures within the facility. Completes orientation, competency verification, and educational programs in accordance with facility and unit specified guidelines.
• Participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups if asked.
• Assists with process improvement initiatives.
• Participates in customer service initiatives, quality projects, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services.
• Maintains or assists with health record input, storage, and retrieval.
• Mail letters to patients.
• Answer T-Cons via Electronic Health Messaging Pool.
• Answer phone calls and check voicemails. Uploading Gastroenterology reports into the electronic health record.
• Schedule clinic appointments and procedures. Review, and handle referrals according to clinic guidelines.
• Train new staff in GI procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
* Education: High school graduate. Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program (whether national, state, or military trained equivalent school) and have a current certificate.

* Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of experience within the past 36 months in a medical setting, prior GI experience a plus. Must have knowledge of fundamentals in anatomy and physiology; principles of aseptic technique; preparing and storing medical equipment; GI procedures; specimen care and handling; infection control. Interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients, physicians, and other nursing staff personnel. Physical ability required for prolonged periods of standing and walking, and to assist with transporting patients and equipment. Emotional ability to perform calmly in emergency situations and meet demands and requests of physicians. Displays dexterity in use of instruments. Knowledge of step-by-step procedure for all gastroenterology cases.

*Certification: Must be certified in Phlebotomy. 
* Life Support Certification: Possess and maintain a current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.  ACLS is also required.  
* Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
